The 17th edition of the Gateway Cup takes place in the heart of four unique St. Louis neighborhoods. Within each of these host communities, the race course is a defined one mile lap and the race is known as a criterium. This Americanized style of racing appeals to both athletes and spectators alike as the peloton, or pack of cyclists, pass by every few minutes at impressive speeds holding lines only inches apart from one another. Spectators can watch the race develop lap after lap and hear commentators announce race strategy, allowing more of an understanding and involvement in the excitement.
There are five races each day based on ability, ranging from newbies to pros. Each day is punctuated by the feature event, the men’s Pro-Am race. In this race, 150 of the nation’s top cyclists will hurl themselves through corners averaging 30 mph towards a typically thrilling sprint finish. Guaranteed inspiration.
Behold! The future pros of cycling! Returning to the schedule of events are the increasingly popular kids races, sponsored by Dogfish. Please check schedule for start times per venue. Tshirts and medals to all participants! And the schwag does not stop there! CHECK OUT the KID'S RACES section of the menu to find out what else the little cherubs will receive for participating. It's enough to make a Pro jealous."
Also of special interest, the Gateway Cup is pleased to announce a charity recipient for this year’s event. A portion of proceeds will benefit Impact100. A nonprofit new to St. Louis, the group’s goal is to encourage 100 women a year to each donate $1000, with all funds benefiting area charities of the group’s choice.
